Pilates bodywork teaches you to concentrate. It could be described as the Western equivalent of Tai Chi Chuan the Chinese art of moving meditation ( that can be developed as a martial art). The exercises are not performed haphazardly or on autopilot, you will need to concentrate single-mindedly. New brain / body nerve connections will be built as the exercises become more challenging. The mind controls the muscles and as you increase the work load your blood flow also increases resulting in more strength and power, faster muscle reactions and more overall control. This is complimented by improved breath control and the ability to relax and stretch and a freedom of movement probably lost since childhood!
